LM™ LLLT — Light Modulation™ Low-Level Light Therapy
LM™ LLLT is Espansione Group's core patented technology — a unique, non-invasive photobiomodulation (PBM) platform originally derived from technology developed by NASA to treat astronaut wounds in space, and subsequently developed and certified for broad medical use.
How It Works
Unlike surface-level red light therapy (RLT), LM™ LLLT works at a biological level. Powerful near-infrared LEDs stimulate cells' mitochondria, triggering biochemical and biophysical reactions that promote:
- ATP production — boosting cellular energy and metabolism
- Endogenous heating — warming tissue from within without thermal damage
- Protein synthesis — supporting tissue repair and regeneration
This mechanism is fundamentally different from ablative or thermal treatments: LM™ LLLT is completely non-invasive, with no downtime and no surface damage.
Wavelengths and Applications
LM™ LLLT leverages multiple light frequencies, each targeting specific biological pathways:
| Wavelength | Colour | Key Applications |
|---|---|---|
| ~630 nm | Red | DED/MGD, Chalazion, Sjögren's Syndrome, tissue regeneration, anti-aging |
| ~415 nm | Blue | Demodex, Blepharitis, Rosacea, acne |
| ~590 nm | Yellow | Post-Blepharoplasty, VEGF inhibition (wet AMD), oedema reduction |
| Near-infrared | Infrared | Deep tissue repair, posterior segment, trichology |
Clinical Evidence
LM™ LLLT has been validated through multiple peer-reviewed clinical trials:
- A head-to-head study published in Cornea (Giannaccare et al.) confirmed LM™ LLLT's superior performance vs. traditional IPL in improving symptoms and tear volume in MGD patients.
- The TFOS DEWS III global consensus report acknowledges LM™ LLLT (PBM) as a clinical tool to enhance tear film stability.
- The LightWave I & II multicentric research programs are investigating LM™ LLLT for dry AMD (AREDS 2–3).
- Preliminary results at ESCRS 2024 demonstrated LM™ LLLT effectiveness in managing DED and intraocular pressure in glaucomatous patients.
